Brethren,

Our “Reunion With History” stated meeting on Sep 9th was an outstanding success with over 80 in attendance including two PMs who presided in the East at the Old Town Hall Temple: Wor. Kenny Haines and RW Meredith Tomlison. The Deputy Grand Master, RW James Scearce, accompanied by the Grand Senior Warden, RW John Quinley; Grand Junior Warden, RW Glover Jones; Grand Senior Deacon, RW James Stanley; Grand Junior Deacon, RW George Dungan; Grand Secretary and PGM, MW Alan Adkins; and MW George Chapin, PGM, honored us with a surprise visit to announce as the last order of business, that our very own RW Ed Cohen was his nominee for Grand Junior Deacon at the upcoming 225th Grand Annual Communication. His announcement was followed by a roaring applause as the Brethren proudly jumped to their feet in honor of our very own Brother Ed! Against the backdrop of our historic reunion --- history was made as a great Mason and Brother of our Lodge was nominated for the progressive Grand Line. One could not have scripted a better evening! Once again, we extend to Brother Ed our warmest congratulations! Thanks to so many for making our reunion a success. A special tip of the Master’s hat to RW Bill Sheads, Bro. Keith Graffius, Wor. Lynn Boerger and Wor. Jim Hawkins for their hard work and support. Compliments also to our Deacons, Bros. Clesson McDonald and Arleigh Rice, for their leadership in delivering an outstanding program on “Traveling” at Acacia Lodge on Sep 11th. There are many designs on October’s Trestle Board (see calendar) --- dust off your tools and let’s go to work. I call your attention to our Child ID service project (we need your help); Masonic Family Day; and fishing trip. Invite a good man to be your guest at our Bring A Friend open house and think of the possibilities! Also, we welcome Bro. Jerry Cassiday, our District MAHOVA Ambassador, at our October stated. Finally, I ask that you hold Amy Breedon, one our Rainbow Girls whose Mom suddenly passed away, in your thoughts and prayers.

See you in lodge!

Harry

Worshipful Master

Around The Quarry

Bring A Friend.

As Senior Deacon it is always good to practice the ritual of the three Masonic degrees. But, it is even better to confer the degrees —– which requires a candidate. That’s where you can help! On October 21 Henry Lodge No. 57 will host an open house from 7:30 – 9:00 pm, so please bring a friend with his family, or members of your family such as brother-in-law, nephew, son, or grandson. There will be food, fellowship, and plenty of information about our craft —– but the success of the program is in your hands —– just BRING A FRIEND! [Contributed by Bro. Clesson McDonald, Senior Deacon]

Traveling Opportunities.

Join your WM as he travels to Howard Lodge No. 101 in Elkridge, MD and Fredericksburg Lodge No. 4, Fredericksburg, VA. See calendar for details.

No Host Dinners Out.

On Saturday, Oct 4th, the fourth of four quarterly No Host Dinners Out will be held. Just show up at the Lodge at 6:00pm. After determining the groups preference for dinner, we will proceed to the selected restaurant and enjoy good food and great fellowship. Dress is casual.

Lite Nite Program.

At 7:30pm on October 7th, the fourth of four 1½ hour “Lite Night” programs will be held at the Lodge. Lite Night programs are designed to be informal (come casual) Masonic Education opportunities. The program will include a Masonic movie, discussion, fellowship, and desserts.

Fall Fishing Trip.

Due to hurricane Isabel the Fall Fishing Trip has been re-scheduled for Sunday, Oct 19th —– space is limited so sign up now! Contact Wor. Paul Kulp, PM at (703) 978-0394.

Henry Brothers In The News.

On October 11th, Henry Lodge will once again perform its CHILD ID service at the City of Fairfax Harvest Bazaar. This service project draws public attention to the good works of both our Lodge and our Fraternity, but, more importantly, provides a vital community service for families. Join us at Fire Station No. 3 and work a shift between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm and, if you have them, wear your Henry Lodge hat and shirt. This is always a rewarding event —– and we can use your help for some or all of the time. Contact our Junior Deacon, Bro. Arleigh Rice, to volunteer at (703) 250-4237. Again, we need your help!

The best steaks in town were cooked for our OES Hope Chapter by Chefs Bobby (L) and Bob (R) [ i.e., Wors. Campbell and Williams].

Wor. Harry (L) and Bro. Dallas Brumback (middle) assisted.

Wor. Roger Firestone (DEO) conducted another successful District training event for lodge officers. RW Ed Cohen (left) was a featured lecturer. Seven Henry Brethren attended.

Wor. Harry conducted a Patriot Day ceremony at the Lodge flagpole on Sep 11th to honor and remember those who lost lives during the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 —– Let us never forget...

“Reunion with History”

by

Worshipful Lynn Boerger, PM 1992

Fairfax City Old Town Hall

7:45 p.m., September 9, 2003

Worshipful Master, Members and Guests,

The Master told me that this part of the program concerns itself with the history of Henry Lodge, and, particularly this place, the Fairfax City Old Town Hall. Permit me, if you will, to let our minds go back in time, and to think about ourselves as being Masons in the year of 1900. There is a stated meeting tonight, here in this room. The date is August 15, 1900. Henry Lodge, as an organization, is 31 years old. This building, the town hall, is brand, spanking new, and was built by one of our own, Brother Joseph E. Willard. Tonight is the first stated meeting in the new building. The town of Fairfax City is vibrant. It is rural. It is the crossroads of a successful, farming community. Fairfax County is home to many dairy cows. The Fairfax Grain and Feed store is just 1/2 block away, right here on Main Street. On the national level, William McKinley has been President for three years.

Can you imagine the excitement that summer night, in this room, as the stated meeting is about to be called to order. Here they were in a new building. During the past 31 years, the Masons had rented meeting space from a Mrs. M. A. Stephenson. They had rented space from the Independent Order of Good Templars, a temperance society. They had rented space from a Mr. Hawxhurst, whose store and post office was diagonally across the street from the Grain and Feed store. When the Hawxhurst building burned 10 years ago, the Masons had been meeting in the jury room in the Fairfax County Courthouse. With this history of not having their own meeting place, one can only imagine the excitement there was in the air as they gathered for their regular stated meeting in this new place.

I can imagine, after opening, the Worshipful Master shared with the members in attendance, the nature of a deed that had been prepared. In that deed, Brother Willard and his wife, Belle L. Wyatt Willard, conveyed the lot and this new building, to the trustees of the Town Hall, with a provision in that trust requiring the Town Hall trustees “to permit the Masonic organization of Henry Lodge No. 57 to hold its regular and special meetings in the upper room of said Hall, and, to have exclusive use the small northeast room on the second floor of said Hall”. That deed carried a date of July 30 and was recorded on October 22.

Now, let us come back to real time. This room was home to Henry Lodge for 70 years. Some of you have some very vivid memories of your Masonic life in this room and this building. Have fun continuing to reminisce during this reunion tonight.
