June, 2003

Brethren,

May was a great month for HL57 --- our Scottish Rite 20th Degree Team performed flawlessly; our JW, Bro. Dallas Brumback, hosted an exceptional Eagle Scout Recognition Program; 8 Brothers donated a day’s labor to Habitat for Humanity as part of our community outreach; we enjoyed a delicious steak dinner prepared by our Stewards (Bros. Keith Graffius & Bob Shurts), honored 9 PMs, and welcomed our DIW, RW Ed Ray during our Stated; 10 Brothers and family members braved the Chesapeake Bay during our annual Spring fishing trip; and a dozen plus members enjoyed our second Lite Nite program on the origins of the Masonic ritual. Thanks to all who made May a great HL57 month! Also, a belated well deserved thank you to Bro. Steve Sylvester for his hard work in providing the chairs from KENA for the GMs visit.

Please support our SW, Wor. Russ Williams, as he sits in the East for our June Stated and presents a special program which will involve our entire Masonic Family (DeMolay, Rainbow, and Eastern Star).

Also, plan on joining us as we warmly welcome our GM to District 4 (click here for details). Two events are planned to celebrate the Feast of St. John the Baptist --- (1) we will worship together on June 22nd at a local church and (2) a joint Table Lodge with neighboring Concord Lodge No. 307 on June 24th --- see Bro. Arleigh Rice for tickets!

See you in lodge!

Harry

Worshipful Master

The Reid J. Simmons Academy of Masonic Leadership

In 1994, MW Thomas Frederick May, Grand Master in 1994-95, established the Reid J. Simmons Masonic Ritual School at Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Virginia. The school was primarily a ritual school, but was also a school where Masons could promote fellowship, and enjoy time with their families. In 1999, MW George Harry Chapin, recognizing the need to educate the members of the craft on Masonic subjects, increased emphasis in this area. MW Chapin changed the name of the school to the Reid J. Simmons Academy of Masonic Leadership to more closely reflect the real mission of the school that he had assigned to the Committee on Masonic Education and the Committee on Work. The school has been expanded to help prepare the Officers of our Lodges to be better leaders. The subjects are directed toward those items that will help prepare the junior officer to develop a better insight into many of the things needed to be an effective Worshipful Master. The academy will be held this year from August 3rd through 6th, 2003 at the Fork Union Military Academy campus and is open to all Virginia Masons. In addition to providing a great opportunity to obtain a Warden's Certificate, Silver or Gold Card, or learn a lecture, catechism or floor work, every member of the Lodge who is planning on becoming an officer of the Lodge or who just wants to learn more about Masonry to become a better Mason should plan to attend this academy. The cost per person is $47/day plus a one time fee of $2 for linens. Reservation information and applications are available in the Lodge information stand or from the Secretary.

Around The Quarry

Joint Table Lodge

Henry Lodge No. 57 and neighboring Concord Lodge No. 307 (District 54) have planned a joint Table Lodge to be held at 7:00 pm on St. John’s Day, 24 June, at Henry Lodge. The speaker will be Bro. BG Richard L. Stinson, National Chaplain of National Sojourners. Tickets are $12.00 each from Bro. Arleigh Rice --- seating is limited --- buy your ticket early!

Grand Master’s District 4 Official Visit

The Grand Master will make his official visit to District 4 on Saturday, 21 June. The open event will be held at the Kena Shrine Center starting with dinner at 6:30 pm. Cost is $15/person. I encourage all Brethren and their Ladies to attend! Click here for details.

Masonic Family Baseball Outing

On Saturday, 5 July, all members of the Henry Lodge Masonic Family (Masons, Rainbow, DeMolay and Eastern Star) and their families are invited to attend a Potomac Cannons baseball game. Game time is 7:05 pm and the program will include a special fireworks display. Make your reserved seating reservations with Bro. Jeff Copeland (703-385-6843)  by 30 May. All Masonic youth go free but must make a reservation; all others are $8.50 per person

No Host Dinners Out

On Saturday, June 28th, the second of four quarterly No Host Dinners Out will be held. Just show up at the Lodge at 6:00p. After determining the groups preference for dinner, we will proceed to the selected restaurant and enjoy good food and great fellowship. Dress is casual.

Grounds Care Volunteers

The lodge lawn is green, growing and will soon need mowing! If you can help to maintain our grounds, please volunteer for by placing your name on the weekly mowing roster posted in the lodge Social Hall or call the WM. Special thanks to those Brethren who have already stepped forward to help!

Julianne Canaday Memorial Scholarship

Now is the time for eligible youth who are a member of a District 4 Masonic youth organization to apply for a Canaday Scholarship. See our JW, Bro. Dallas Brumback for details!
