From The East

In Memoriam

We of Henry Lodge mourn the loss of  Wor. Donald Andrew DuBois, PM who, on Saturday, 5 October, was called to his Celestial Home.  Services with full military honors and a Masonic service are scheduled for 9:00 AM Wednesday, 13 November at the (old) chapel at Arlington National Cemetery followed by a coffee hour at the Ft. Myer Officer’s Club. From 10:00 AM to Noon.  Our deepest sympathy to his wife, Jo and children.

The Brethren extend their heartfelt  sympathy to Brother John Mayers, and family, whose sister Mrs. Mary Jean McMurdy of Beaver Falls, PA  was called home on October 22nd.

“We go on from one design to another, add hope to hope and lay out plans for the employment of many years, forgetting that we may be suddenly alarmed at the approach of Death when we least expect him and at an hour which we probably conclude to be the meridian of our existence.”

Thanks: My profound thanks and appreciation to the unknown Brother or Brothers who mowed the Lodge lawn while the Master was out of town in September.

Well done!: To Brother Dallas Brumback for putting together an excellent “Bring a Friend Night”.

Worshipful Brother Eugene Kenyon, PM  receives Fifty Year Veteran’s emblem.  Ten members of Henry Lodge  and four generations of Kenyon’s rendezvoused on the 7th of October at Spurmont Lodge No. 98 in Strasburg, VA where Wor. Bro. Eugene Kenyon, PM was presented his fifty year veteran’s emblem by Rt. Wor. Ed Ray prior to the opening of Lodge. At my count, fifty or more members of Spurmont were present for a great evening of fellowship.

Fishing Trip:  Got the blues?  Our fall fishing trip did.  The Krewe, consisting of Dave Carne, Jerry Cassiday, Dick May, Paul Kulp, Donna Kluefer, Don Lee, Clesson McDonald,  Bob Williams, Cap Smith, Charlie Seaford, Wieland Johnson and myself  produced a catch of fifty-two nice blue fish.  That  did not include one seagull, one oyster, a dozen under sized flounder, several croaker and an assortment of other species.

Henry Bears:  On the eve of our October stated, Fairfax City Councilman Jeffrey Greenfield accompanied by his bride Lisa, joined Fairfax City Chief of Police Richard Rappoport, his Deputy Chief and Volunteer Fire Chief William Boehm all of whom shared dinner with us prior to Lodge.  Henry Lodge Teddy Bears were presented to our police and fire representatives to be given to children or  those, who through trauma, need a good friend to hold.  The little bears, all named Henry, wear a gold sweater with the square and compasses and are inscribed “Mason’s Care”.

Which war was it?  At the October Stated, the Eastern Star used the theme of “The war between the States” or “The war of Northern aggression.” Or was it the Civil War?  In any event, the fellowship hall was very tastefully decorated without favor to either side. In this setting, we broke the bread of another delicious repast.  I was reminded that as my Brothers surrounded me that evening so were Masonic Brethren of both sides frequently attended by a Brother whose uniform might not match his own.

Congratulations:  To our newest Brother, Robert Kent Shurts, who was raised to the sublime degree of Master Mason on 15 October.  The next evening Bro. Bob attended District School with us at Mt. Carmel 133 and took on the role of  Junior Steward during the practice of the Master Mason’s Degree.  Well done Bro. Bob.

Veteran’s Hospital Visitation:  Sunday, the 27th of October, Wor. Bob Williams, PM and your Master joined six members of VFW Post 8469 in visiting veterans at the Washington Veteran’s Hospital.  It is difficult to describe  the joy with which we were received and the pleasure derived from just spending a few minutes with patients, some of whom have been there in excess of a year.

Fraternally,

Ralph W. Smith, Jr.
